October 23, 2022 – Newman University Athletics mourns the passing of men's soccer player Austin Madubuike who passed away Sunday.
Madubuike had been in the Intensive Care Unit at a Fort Smith hospital since October 15.
The first-year junior from Toronto, Canada, Madubuike was a beloved member of the Jets team. His teammates dedicated the remaining games to their friend and brother.
Newman Director of Athletics Joanna Pryor, head coach Cliff Brown and the men's soccer program released this statement: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Austin Madubuike. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family, teammates and friends at this difficult time. We will miss Austin greatly."
A moment of silence will be held at all Newman home athletic events this weekend, beginning with volleyball's Friday Oct. 28 match versus Central Missouri.
The university has made counselors available to students and Newman community members.
Funeral arrangements are pending at this time.
Madubuike’s No. 4 jersey was retired during a special tribute before the team’s game. There was also a moment of silence held to honor his memory.
