A new film titled ‘Clash’, directed by Canadian-Nigerian multiple award-winning film director/producer, Pascal Atuma was released by American movie streaming company, Netflix.
Clash has a star-studded cast drawn from Nigeria’s Nollywood to Hollywood, and beyond. Among the cast are Stephanie Okereke-Linus, Omoni Oboli, Brian Hooks, Merlisa Langellier, Vivian Williams, Pascal Atuma and many more.
The movie explores the identity crisis of a young Nigerian who for many years lived a lie with a misconception that his uncle was his biological father. He had also to grapple with the complexities of multi-racial relationship.
The movie captures the journey of the young man to discover his biological father in the midst of love and multicultural society.
In the movie, culture clashes with -love, reality, truth, lies and environment.
The producer of the movie, Pascal Atuma sheds more light on the conceptualization and making of the movie: “If you look at the cast, you’ll see that it was drawn from the West, the Caribbean, Africa…and there were so many Canadian-Italians, Jewish-Canadians, Indian-Canadians, Chinese and so on.
“So, we made a movie for the global market, but preaching multi-culturalism, because that is partly what Canada is preaching right now. That is why the film was co-sponsored. The film was co-sponsored through an envelope for FEVA TV from CMF (Canada Media Funds) administered by Telefilm Canada Media Fund (CMF), and one of Atuma’s Government College Umuahia classmates, Pius Chigoziri Harbor.
The movie’s storyline also reflects a broad spectrum of experience and nationalities; Atuma also spoke on that: “Even though it is an African story, it is a family story, and the world over, we have families. It is a story that has to do with the struggle of a young man whose father died when he was very little and the mum married the uncle.
He has grown up thinking that the uncle is his biological father, only for him to find out in Canada, during his graduation, when his uncle came over, that the uncle was not his real biological father. The family had him live a lie for this number of years and when he found out, he was very angry. In the midst of the anger, he was also dealing with a bi-racial relationship.
“He was dealing with a lot. That is how the title ‘Clash’ came about.
“The clash was originally written by a Nigerian-American, George Kalu, it is an African Diasporan story which we want to use to target the global audience.”
The distribution company for the movie in Africa is Filmone. They were supposed to release the movie in cinemas on May 08, 2020, however, this could not happen due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This one the film did not go to the cinema.
