The Oscars red carpet is known for safe, crowd-pleasing fashions. Tonight the attendees decided to play it chic not safe, and how lucky are we for their courage? Risks yielded the event’s big wins: a series of show-stopping metallic gowns embellished to the hilt (Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton; Brie Larson in Celine), the deployment of pink as a power color (Gemma Chan in Valentino Couture; Kacey Musgraves in Giambattista Valli), and a man who left the standard tux behind (Billy Porter in Christian Siriano) and a teen who embraced classic suiting (Elsie Fisher in Thom Browne). Even awards season veterans had fun playing against type (Rachel Weisz in Givenchy Couture, Charlize Theron in Dior), pulling out fantastical looks to add drama to cinema’s biggest night.
Charlize Theron
The actress stepped out in a freshly chopped dark bob and a backless, dusty blue long-sleeved Dior gown. She accessorized the look with BVLGARI’s Serpenti collection, including a white gold double necklace with a matching bracelet, and a diamond necklace of over 75 carats.
JLO
We bow down to this disco ball of a human, in a metallic embroidered mirror mosaic long-sleeved gown by Tom Ford. It's all glamour for the most glam night of the year.
Regina King
King glowed in one of the few white gowns of the evening: an ivory, strapless gown with sculptural hand draping and an asymmetrical train, custom made by Oscar de la Renta.
Lady Gaga
The A Star is Born nominee channelled Audrey Hepburn in a breath-taking, custom, sculptural black gown by Alexander McQueen. She paired the look with a 128 carat Tiffany diamond necklace and perfectly Gaga elbow-length black leather gloves.
Laura Harrier
Harrier brought the capital F fashion to the red carpet in an ethical and eco-responsible Louis Vuitton creation. The gown was custom made in silk, embroidered with glass beads, Swarovski crystal shards, and sequins.
Kacey Musgraves
Even in a sea of pink on the Oscars red carpet, the country star was a standout in layered tulle Giambattista Valli Couture with a crystal belt at the waist. The singer wears all that volume like a couture dream.
Gemma Chan
Another Crazy Rich Asians breakout star, Chan is a fashion icon on the rise in a high-neck fuchsia taffeta gown with expanding frills from Valentino's most recent Couture collection. The pockets are just an added bonus.
Constance Wu
The Crazy Rich Asians star was a standout in off-the-shoulder custom yellow Atelier Versace gown, complete with Swarovski crystal detail at the bodice, worn with a simple, elegant ponytail.
